BUSINESS MODULE 5

DANCING WITH ELEPHANTS - COMING SOON!

Operating a self supporting business without being stomped by traditional charities and NGOs

Although they often share common objectives (such as wanting communities to have access to safe water), NGOs using conventional relief based approaches can unintentionally destroy local safe water social ventures.  For example, if a social venture is selling water purifiers for less than it costs a family to treat their water related illnesses and an NGO begins distributing water purifiers for free, why would anyone choose to purchase a bio-filter.

This module (under development) provides guidance on meeting with organizations with safe water objectives to develop a common strategy that ensures that the most people end up with sustained access to safe water.  For example, if the NGO does not have enough money to provide everyone in the community with a water purifier, how will they communicate who is eligible to receive one and who will need to purchase one.  Special attention is also needed to consider impacts on dignity and respect.  Studies consistently show that families that purchase their water purifier are much more likely to consistently use it and hence receive the health and financial benefit from access to safe water.
